What is episode 1 of Chainsaw man about?
DAY-TO-DAY LIFE
The first episode is as comprehensive a hook for a story as a premiere can possibly be, and it accomplishes this thanks to Denji‘s characterization. His motivations aren’t inherently unique and if anything, it’s their simplicity in contrast to his circumstances that make him entertaining. All he wants is money and a simple life with a girl he likes.
His late father racked up mountains of debt to the Yakuza, crushing his youthful hopes, and the struggle to pay it off never seems to be enough. He has a long way to go, despite the fact that he is murdering demons with the assistance of Pochita, a chainsaw devil who is his only companion. Additionally, these peculiarities are portrayed entirely straight as though they were typical in a world quite similar to our own.
There is unquestionably something funny about this universe where a character like Pochita exists and is treated so seriously, but seldom does one feel the need to laugh the entire time. Just as the cloudy skies in each scene absorb any brightness, the script’s potential for humor is also diminished. Denji occasionally cringes with a smile when he thinks of his aspirations for the future.
“I WISH THEY’D AT LEAST LET ME DREAM”
The world premiere is an artistic fantasy in which Kensuke Ushio’s music lulls the listener into liminal zones where the artwork strives to surpass itself at every step. Even when compared to its cooler counterparts of recent years, the directing is lively and seldom conventional, from the characters’ faces to their positions.
The soundtrack, in particular, reminds us of Ushio’s composition for the 2019 film Boogiepop and Others, yet unlike Boogiepop, the images are equally as strong. The variable character designs in the earlier series gave the impression that Ushio’s music was making up for them, but Chainsaw Man provides his otherworldly sound the graphics it needs to be outstanding.
It goes without saying that because this is the premiere, there is some legitimate worry about the quality changing or degrading. There are those that suffer more than others, and even the best anime ventures are not immune to it. MAPPA is a sizable studio with numerous (some may argue too many) projects on the go, but Chainsaw Man is particularly large. Who’s to say that Chainsaw Man couldn’t follow in Attack on Titan’s footsteps if, despite the series’ fame, not even Attack on Titan was immune to the studio’s restrictions? The issue of animation, particularly 3D animation, which has been overlooked in this series’ promotion, is the one that is most crucial to those worries.
And this is where this preview packs a powerful 1-2 blow. Yes, 3D CGI is used in the first episode of Chainsaw Man, especially when Denji is in his titular form and mowing down his enemies. But it’s important to note that the 3D and 2D are combined really skillfully, creating action that never seems like the style is being betrayed by the change.
Furthermore, the episode is so aesthetically stunning that it isn’t even 3D-ready yet, so this shouldn’t be a deal-breaker just yet. Prior to the pivotal combat, the art design was on point, even exhibiting some realism animation approaches that gave a very stressful and gory scenario to a lot of personalities.
A WORTH-WATCHING MOVIE
The first episode of Chainsaw Man is self-contained and incredibly fulfilling; it starts out with Denji in a situation from which he is desperate to leave and concludes with him on a road that he believes will lead to the realization of his aspirations. It creates a realistic, difficult-to-avoid-falling-in-love portrayal of its protagonist and allows the viewer to feel the ceremonial demon form’s rage at the unending irritations that stand in the way of his bliss.
This premiere could not have more successfully connected the audience to a character who was so sadly behind the times yet so relatably yearning for more in life. Although the next few episodes will be key in determining how consistently high-quality the artwork is, the episode’s successful and tasteful fusion of 2D and 3D is a wonderful sign for this series moving ahead.
